Value-Added Proposition (i.e., how it benefits attendees)
Attendees will learn that one of the keys to project success is a well facilitated conversation about what we are going to do and why. And in actually experiencing such a conversation, realize it’s a far from trivial endeavor to move from realizing it’s a good idea, to actually completing such a conversation. Be exposed to some of the skills to facilitate such a conversation.
Details:
There's not a lot of guidance in print on how to have a multi-discipline team work together to collectively determine how they are going to sequence decisions and their work to create a successful outcome. However, individual project teams are starting to figure out how to do it successfully. One such team is working on the design and construction of a new $320Million, 230,000 square foot hospital in Castro Valley for Sutter Health. They completed the 100% CD Structural Package in 8 months, obtained the construction permit 7 months after that, got steel on site 7 months after that, and during that period met 28 other OSHPD deadlines for the delivery of the various minor and major design packages.
A subset of that project team, that have through a combination of their own diligence and sheer repetition become facilitators of such planning teams, will be working with you in groups to pass on as much of the knowledge they have gained as possible on how to get a team to map out it's processes in a focused and valuable manner.
With the guidance of the your facilitator, you will work with a group of your fellow attendees on a typical design and/or construction problem and experience in as first-hand a way as possible what it's like to work in this manner. The goal is for you to realize why working like this is so essential, and why it's so tough, and learn enough about how to do it that you can go back to your own projects and start similar tough but essential conversations.

LCI Nor Cal Community of Practice
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
The Northern California Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers. We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Northern California. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
